Cuts Another 50,000 Jobs and Possibly a Brand: TDS

Volkswagen’s supervisory board approved a restructuring plan that adds 50,000 more job cuts, bringing the total planned reduction to 100,000 across a global workforce of more than 650,000. The company will also “seek alternatives” rather than close four plants in Emden, Hanover, Neckarsulm, and Zwickau, a move that could involve selling production to other automakers. A leaked document tied to the plan suggests Seat could be retired as a brand in the coming years, while Cupra—described as the newer Spanish automaker’s performance spinoff—could continue. Separately, BMW recalled 190,000 older sedans in Germany (2014–2020 3, 5, and 7 Series) over starter-relay corrosion risk.
