Dealers Are Asking More for New Cars Than Ever, and Sedans Have Gone Up the Most
New-car asking prices have climbed again, with dealers advertising an average of $51,974 as of June 30, according to Automotive News. The figure surpasses the nearly three-year-old record by a narrow margin, after $51,820 topped the previous high set on July 7, 2023. Prices increased further over the last days of June, leaving the final day’s average $2,421 higher than a year earlier, or 4.9%, and $314 above a month before. The study tracked 133 nameplates from franchised dealers’ websites and focuses on marketed prices, not automaker-set list pricing, excluding direct-to-customer brands such as Tesla, Lucid and Rivian. Compact sedans saw the biggest jump, up $2,869 (12%) from late June 2025, while convertibles fell the most, down 9.8%. Among individual models, Kia Telluride rose 16.4% and Toyota RAV4 increased 15.7%, while Hyundai Ioniq 5 dropped 17% and Jeep Wrangler fell 4%.
