Deltona bans e-bikes and e-scooters for everyone under 18

Deltona city leaders voted to ban e-bikes and e-scooters for anyone under 18 within city limits, citing safety concerns after “countless crashes” during the past school year. Parents interviewed by Channel 9 said they’ve witnessed accidents and welcomed the change. Mayor Santiago Avila Jr. said the goal is to prevent tragedies, arguing that minors may not vote or drink alcohol but could be given access to a “dangerous machine” on sidewalks, where visibility and reaction time differ from regular bicycles. Enforcement remains unclear because state law does not classify e-bikes as motorized vehicles.
