Driver's specialty: Road course guru | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Shane van Gisbergen solidified his reputation as a road-course specialist by winning at Sonoma Raceway, extending his streak on NASCAR’s twists and turning Sunday into another milestone. The Trackhouse Racing driver captured his second consecutive victory at the 1.99-mile road course north of San Francisco, leading 74 of the final 83 laps after starting sixth. He held off runner-up Chase Briscoe, who finished 0.357 seconds behind in a No. 97 Chevrolet after practice left the car less than ideal. Van Gisbergen celebrated with a burnout for the grandstands and said he ran out of time in the closing laps. Briscoe attributed the result to a mistake getting the No. 19 Toyota into Turn 1 with four laps remaining. It was van Gisbergen’s eighth career win on road and street tracks, breaking a tie with Chase Elliott, and his second win of the season moved him up three spots to 14th in points. Ty Gibbs started on pole and finished third, ahead of Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell.
