Electric Vehicle Fleets Turn Into Power Plants in New Solar Charging
A new study argues that EV fleets can do more than charge—they can act like distributed power plants when managed correctly. Published in Energy Reports, the research presents a two-level scheduling framework coordinating solar generation, stationary battery storage, and fleets of EVs. Led by Kunhao Niu and colleagues, it uses an EV aggregator that groups vehicles by shared traits such as arrival and departure times and state-of-charge needs. To form clusters, the team combines particle swarm optimization with fuzzy C-means, and then models the collective charging flexibility of each cluster using zonotopes from control theory. The results suggest intelligent vehicle-to-grid orchestration can cut a station’s evening grid purchases by a quarter and increase usable energy from solar hours, addressing volatility, costly battery cycling, and unpredictable driver charging behavior.
