England, discarded vapes and batteries ignite a garbage truck, sending up thick smoke

A bin lorry in Shildon, County Durham, caught fire after discarded vapes and batteries were thrown into household waste, producing thick smoke and flames on the back of the vehicle. No injuries were reported, but Durham County Council warned residents about the fire risks posed by battery-powered items when they enter general rubbish. The fire happened on the morning of Oct. 2, according to The Northern Echo. The council said disposable vapes and many everyday products contain lithium batteries that can ignite if damaged. Residents were urged not to use rubbish or recycling bins for batteries or vapes, and instead place them with food waste if bagged separately, or use local recycling points.
