George Russell flags tyre overheating concern ahead of Malaysian Grand Prix
George Russell warned that tyre overheating could be a major problem at the Malaysian Grand Prix, with the Sepang International Circuit set for a hot weekend after the race moved from its earlier schedule. Speaking at Thursday’s media session, the Mercedes driver said the FIA declared a heat hazard and that Sepang’s temperatures could push tyres beyond the optimum range, making it harder to pass. Russell noted Sepang’s resurfacing and abrasive track characteristics, along with “yo-yo” racing concerns, saying the key difference is overheating rather than surface effects that keep drivers closer elsewhere. He also expects high degradation due to the circuit resembling “sandpaper.” Friday practice will be critical for measuring tyre wear and track behaviour.
