HMRC confirms new VAT charges for older cars

The UK tax authority HMRC has unveiled new VAT road fuel scale charges for drivers of older petrol and diesel cars, effective from May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027. These fixed sums, added to VAT returns to cover private fuel use in a company vehicle, are recalculated annually based on CO2 emissions and apply to accounting periods of 12 months, 3 months, or 1 month, with entries required in Box 1 of the VAT return. The scheme targets motorists with older vehicles, and when CO2 data is missing, the band is determined by engine size according to HMRC guidelines.
