How giant trolls are helping transform an Adirondack mill town
A giant 36-foot wooden troll installation—“Patrick Sapling”—has been unveiled at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, New York, marking the Danish recycle artist Thomas Dambo’s first permanent artwork in the state. The sculpture, unveiled last month, is intended to convert a short-term visitor surge into longer-term economic benefits for a town of about 5,000. Dambo’s traveling exhibit, “Trolls: Save the Humans,” has drawn thousands of fans all summer through Oct. 31 and is credited with boosting local activity, including a scavenger hunt, a troll-inspired German pilsner by Raquette River Brewing, and townwide art programming such as play sessions and workshops for making birdhouses. The article also notes Dambo’s background and his global portfolio, including nearly 200 installations.
