Kia is recalling 21,290 2025 and 2026 model-year EV9 electric SUVs due to an airbag sensor problem tied to the Occupant Detection System (ODS). If a child or a child seat is positioned in the front passenger seat, the system may fail to deactivate the airbag, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. The NHTSA says the vehicles no longer meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Kia reports two warning signs that could appear: an airbag warning light and/or an audible seatbelt reminder chime even without a passenger. Dealers will inspect and replace ODS mat and bladder tube parts at no cost. Owner letters begin Oct. 20, and VIN lookup opens Sept. 4.
