Kimi Antonelli is waltzing to the F1 title, and his teammate has a Lewis Hamilton problem
Kimi Antonelli's Monaco Grand Prix performance signals a championship trajectory as he opened a lead of nearly half a minute. The 19-year-old was on course to his fifth straight win, pushing lap times that were about two seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari in second. Mercedes race engineer Peter Bonnington calmly urged him to ease, highlighting the risks of pushing in Monaco's tight streets. The race unfolded with expectations that Ferrari might challenge Mercedes, but Antonelli's pace left rivals with little reply. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff noted that Antonelli's lap times were two seconds quicker than the McLarens and more than a second faster than Ferrari, making him the youngest Monaco Grand Prix winner.
Russell's day went off the rails after starting sixth, getting stuck behind Isack Hadjar's Red Bull early in the stint. A five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane would have altered the final times, but Mercedes reportedly did not serve it. Antonelli's flawless drive contrasted with Russell's misfortune as the race wore on and Mercedes faced a difficult path to the title. Hamilton's pace remained strong for Ferrari, but could not match the Mercedes youngster's speed, highlighting a widening gap in Monaco's high-stakes contest.
