Man's Claim That Brakes Failed on Jaguar Was Scam to Avoid Car Payments, Court Rules

A judge in Liverpool ruled that a man’s claim his Jaguar’s brakes failed was staged to avoid car payments. Nathan Owen, 33, told police he was trapped in a runaway Jaguar and said a button handbrake, neutral, and reverse “nothing worked,” as the car reached speeds of up to 85 mph on a route from Ormskirk north of Liverpool toward Bolton. Merseyside Police later said officers had to use their own vehicles to slow him down after responding to the 999 call on March 6, 2024. Owen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and fraud and was sentenced to four years and three months in prison.
