Mayor Calls For Peace After Three Oakland Officers Injured, 30 Arrested at #NotOurPresident Protest reports that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf urged protesters to end violence after clashes at a #NotOurPresident rally turned chaotic late Wednesday. Police said three Oakland officers were injured and three Pleasanton patrol cars were damaged, while 30 people were arrested. Officers reported that the arrests and 11 additional citations included allegations ranging from assault and vandalism to unlawful assembly, failure to disperse, and possession of a firearm. Authorities also said 40 fires were set and at least 16 shops were vandalized. The mayor and council president Lynette Gibson McElhaney emphasized that destruction harms local small businesses and noted the city’s sanctuary-city stance. The protest began peacefully at Frank Ogawa Plaza at 4:40 p.m., police said, before swelling from “a couple hundred” to about 7,000, then splitting into factions that trashed businesses. The rally echoed protests elsewhere nationwide.
