Mexico, Switzerland and Brazil topped their World Cup groups after the final matchday of the group stage, as FIFA moved toward the Round of 32. Matchday three concluded across Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, with the tournament using an expanded format of 48 teams. The top two finishers in each of the 12 groups advanced automatically, while eight of the best third-place teams also qualified. In Group B, Switzerland faced Canada and won 2-1, taking the lead early through Ruben Vargas in the 46th minute, then adding a second via Promise David in the 76th minute after Canadian efforts. Switzerland finished with seven points and secured second place on goal differential, with Canada level on four points with Bosnia. Elsewhere in the group stage, results determined the eight third-place slots as Scotland’s earlier Haiti result became relevant for qualification scenarios.
