Mexico, Switzerland and Brazil topped their groups after the final matchday of the World Cup group stage, setting up the next phase of the expanded 48-team tournament. With three games played late Wednesday and early Thursday, each group’s top two finishers qualified automatically for the Round of 32, while eight of the best third-place teams also advanced. Switzerland opened Group B on home turf in Vancouver against Canada after a goalless first half, then took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute through Ruben Vargas. Breel Embolo made it 2-0 in the 57th with a composed finish after a defensive error, before Promise David added a goal in the 76th to complete a 2-1 win. Switzerland ended on seven points; Canada and Bosnia finished level on four, with Canada second on goal differential.
