Miles And 16 Hours: The Cops In New Zealand May Have The Longest Recorded Car Chase - Jalopnik
A police chase in New Zealand lasted an extraordinary 16 hours, covering 447 miles (720 kilometers) and making it a candidate for the longest recorded car chase. The incident took place around 1 a.m. near Stoke, close to the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, when police initially tried to pursue a 20-year-old suspect, Michael Massie. Officers abandoned the first attempt for safety reasons, then tried again as Massie sped toward Christchurch and later drove south. Near Waikouaiti, police even deployed spike strips but he kept going. Massie eventually ditched the wagon and fled on foot, but officers found the car hidden among pine trees and arrested him with help from a dog. He pleaded guilty and received 80 hours of community work.
