Morocco: China and the EU Could Turn Morocco Into a Surprise Global Hub for Electric Vehicles
xCruzo Brief
Morocco could emerge as an unexpected electric-vehicle hub as Europe tries to block subsidized Chinese EVs, while Chinese manufacturers build inside the country to avoid EU tariffs. China produced more than seven in ten of the world’s EVs in 2024, exporting about 1.25 million, mainly to Europe. The EU responded with extra duties up to 35% in 2024 on top of a 10% tariff, but Chinese sales in Europe nearly doubled between 2024 and 2025. The pressure is being met with new investment: Chinese firms have announced $6 billion to build battery and EV components in Morocco.
