French police detain hundreds in Paris after violent celebrations of PSG's Champions League title
French police detained hundreds in Paris after violent celebrations of PSG's Champions League title, with as many as 20,000 people gathered along the Champs-Elysees. Demonstrators lit flares, honked car horns and moved toward major arteries as officers worked to contain disturbances across several districts. A police officer was injured, and authorities reported 45 arrests by 10 p.m. The main ring road was briefly blocked before police dispersed the crowd, and damage included a bakery and a restaurant while some groups targeted a police station in the 8th Arrondissement and closures near the PSG stadium in the 16th. PSG’s title win came in Budapest, where the final was decided on penalties against Arsenal. Last year’s celebrations prompted wider security concerns: in May last year, 201 people were injured and more than 500 arrests were recorded across France as police maintained high alert with around 8,000 officers deployed in Paris.
