Nissan has halted development of an all-electric version of its top-selling Qashqai SUV in Europe as the automaker cuts costs and reduces the number of models in its global lineup, according to six sources. The move could leave Nissan behind established rivals and Chinese newcomers in one of Europe’s most important EV segments. If the electric Qashqai project is restarted, two sources say it may not reach the market until the early 2030s. Nissan had announced in 2023 it would build an electric Qashqai at its Sunderland plant in northeast England, but development was paused early in 2025. The company is in discussions with the British government over financial support for an updated plan for Sunderland, which employs about 6,000 people. Reuters reported an expected announcement in coming months, while Nissan said it remains committed to expanding its “electrified” lineup.
