Nissan and Honda have agreed to jointly develop computer parts and software for vehicles targeted for sale in fiscal 2029, the companies said Monday in Tokyo. Under the deal, Nissan—based in Yokohama—and Honda, headquartered in Tokyo, will share standardized components known as “core ECUs” (electronic control units) and related software. Talks began in 2024, initially centered on electric vehicles and “auto intelligence” technology, though Monday’s agreement did not name EVs or specific models. The focus is on software-defined vehicles whose functions can be updated digitally. The automakers cited cost cutting, faster development, and scale efficiencies, while noting competition shifting toward software, automation, and zero emissions.
