Oldest U.S. Navy Supercarrier Heading To NYC For 250 Celebrations
The U.S. Navy’s oldest supercarrier, USS Nimitz (CVN-68), is headed to New York Harbor for the International Naval Review 250 celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary. The event will draw a lineup that includes U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels, along with participation from more than 50 allied and partner nations, according to the Navy. Nimitz, which has spent most of its career in the Pacific and the Middle East, will make its first visit to New York City, an aspect highlighted as especially notable for the anniversary. During the week-long program, the carrier will take a central role following the Parade of Sail on July 4. While anchored in New York, the ship will host distinguished visitors and its crew of thousands will engage with residents of New York and New Jersey through community relations projects, public events, and memorial ceremonies. The article notes the 1976 U.S. Bicentennial event in New York Harbor also included more than 50 warships, and its host ship was USS Forrestal (CV-59).
