Ontario Police officer Tarun Bali dies after being struck by vehicle during an attempted apprehension

Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali died after being struck by a vehicle during an attempted apprehension in Hearst, Ontario, around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Hearst is about 600 kilometres northwest of Sudbury. The driver, Hearst resident Justin Veronneau, faces charges of first-degree murder, dangerous driving, flight from police, assault of a peace officer and resisting arrest. Police say he had fled from a hospital where he was being held under the Mental Health Act prior to the incident and remains in custody.
