Ontario Police officer Tarun Bali dies after being struck by vehicle during an attempted apprehension
Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali died after being struck by a vehicle during an attempted apprehension in Hearst, Ontario, around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Hearst is about 600 kilometres northwest of Sudbury. The driver, Hearst resident Justin Veronneau, faces charges of first-degree murder, dangerous driving, flight from police, assault of a peace officer and resisting arrest. Police say he had fled from a hospital where he was being held under the Mental Health Act prior to the incident and remains in custody. The investigation is being led by the OPP Criminal Investigations Branch, with assistance from the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. The circumstances are under review as investigators gather evidence and interview witnesses.
