Paul) Steven Furuseth, 78, died on May 29, 2026, surrounded by his wife and the wilderness he loved. Born April 19, 1948, Furuseth grew up on the family property outside Thief River Falls, raised among six Furuseth brothers known as “The Vikings.” He competed as a gifted wrestler, placing fourth at the 1965 Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament, and continued at Northland Community and Technical College and later Gustavus Adolphus College. At 19, he met Arlene Wilson and they married three years later, building 55 years of family life tied to education and outdoors. Furuseth taught science in Wadena and then Roseau for more than two decades, earning a master’s degree in education and a 1981 Teacher of the Year nomination. He semi-retired in 1995 to work at Furuwood Sugarbush near Detroit Lakes, then returned to teach at the White Earth Reservation school.
