Polestar Wants Answers After Being Banned In The US

Polestar says it wants answers after the US government banned it from selling new cars starting in 2027, citing its ties to China. The automaker does not plan to appeal, but it is questioning why it was denied permission when Volvo—owned by the same Chinese parent company—received approval. Documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal say Polestar expected approval after more than a year working with the US Department of Commerce. Polestar filed an application in May 2025 with the Bureau of Industry and Security to keep selling connected vehicles. It answered detailed federal questions and offered security measures such as cybersecurity reviews, audits, and changes to limit China-linked access to vehicle data. Volvo’s approval came in May, while Polestar’s was rejected the following month. Polestar says the outcomes may amount to “disparate treatment.”
