Rally Tally Day 3: Two killed, 13 injured across 11 new crashes
The South Dakota Highway Patrol’s daily Rally Tally reported two deaths and 13 injuries across 11 new crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The figures cover incidents from 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, and include investigations handled by the Highway Patrol only—not statistics from the Sturgis Police Department or county sheriff offices. One fatality occurred after a motorcyclist crashed while passing a vehicle in the Black Hills National Forest. The Patrol said a 46-year-old man riding a 2008 Harley-Davidson died after losing control in a no-passing zone and rolling into a ditch; he was not wearing a helmet. Another rider died in Custer State Park after a 2002 Yamaha overturned in a ditch, and a 2019 Polaris RZR ATV rollover sent three people to a Rapid City hospital.
