Rivian Has An R2 Master Plan To Close The Gap With Tesla
Rivian says it has a “Point to Point” plan to close the autonomy gap with Tesla. The Irvine, California EV maker says its system will work like a supervised robotaxi, letting drivers enter an address and having the vehicle drive door-to-door from home to a nearby store and back. Point to Point is scheduled for R2 and Gen 2 R1 owners in 2027, after an initial limited, invitation-only rollout later this year. Rivian CEO Robert Scaringe described the feature during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, saying it will handle city streets, stoplights, and highway interchanges with driver supervision. Rivian links Point to Point to its Large Driving Model, trained on “hundreds of thousands” of driving sequences daily. California and Florida will be first, and Rivian says it won’t be geofenced.
