Rivian opens first Metro Detroit charger as volume R2 hits showrooms

Rivian has opened its first fast charger in Metro Detroit as it pushes toward EV volume leadership with the launch of the R2 SUV. The site, at 780 East Big Beaver Road in Troy, extends Rivian Adventure Network infrastructure built since 2018—initially aimed at state and federal parks where R1T and R1S vehicles could charge on 240-volt, 300 kW equipment after off-road trips. With the $50K R2 targeting the compact SUV mainstream, Rivian says its fast-charge focus shifts to urban areas while still supporting existing Adventure routes such as connections to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Rivian is also adopting Tesla’s NACS charging standard; the R2 gets a rear-left NACS port for easier cord access.
