Rwanda on track to host F1 Grand Prix
Rwanda is reportedly on track to host its continent’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix in more than 30 years, according to sources cited by AFP. The report says Rwanda beat rival South Africa for the opportunity. President Paul Kagame launched the bid about two years ago as part of a wider effort to raise the country’s international profile through sport, which has included hosting the road cycling world championships and sponsoring high-profile European football clubs. The government says the approach has boosted inbound tourism. However, rights groups accuse Rwanda of “sportswashing,” citing allegations of killings and disappearances, which the government denies. South Africa’s sports minister posted that the race would likely take place in 2030.
