Scene at Miami airport where five died described as 'utter devastation'

Five people were killed and five injured when an Amazon cargo plane overran at Miami International Airport on Sunday, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The victims were passengers of vehicles on the ground, NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy said, describing a van “torn apart” after the Boeing 767 hit it first. The aircraft then struck a fence, crossed a public road and stopped just before hitting parked cars. Homendy visited the scene and called it “utter devastation,” noting extensive debris, including airbag components and parts from both vehicles and the aircraft. Investigators are examining factors ranging from mechanical issues to environmental variables and crew performance; the flight data and cockpit voice recorders have been recovered. The flight was operated by 21 Air under contract for Amazon, with Flight 7598 departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami lacks EMAS runway overrun protection systems.
