Sindhu becomes first Indian to win Japan Open title

PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the Japan Open women’s singles title on Sunday, defeating home favorite Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17. After trailing early in the opening game, Sindhu fought back to take control and closed out the match in straight games. The 31-year-old said the win meant “the flag” and “my country,” according to an Instagram story after the final. It was her first major triumph since capturing the Singapore Open in 2022 and her first tour-level title since winning the Syed Modi International in December 2024. The victory arrives as a boost ahead of the World Championships in New Delhi, scheduled for August 17-23.
