Singapore Grand Prix: Heat hazard declared for fourth time this season
xCruzo Brief
The Singapore Grand Prix has again been declared a heat-hazard race, following a second straight weekend using the designation in Formula 1 and marking the fourth time this season. Under the FIA definition, teams can install cooling systems that pump liquid through a vest worn by the driver to control cockpit temperatures when forecasts exceed 31C at some point during the race. Singapore’s conditions typically sit at 31-33C with high humidity and daily rain, and temperatures can stay near 30C even at night. Cooling kits aren’t mandatory, but drivers who skip them must carry 5kg of ballast. Mercedes has opted out, citing development compromises, and FIA allowances of $50,000 (£38,000) and $75,000 (£57,000) respectively.
