Small but powerful African nation is bringing F1 back to the continent. Not everyone is celebrating
xCruzo Brief
Formula One is returning to Africa for the first time in more than three decades, with Rwanda awarded a 10-year contract to host a Grand Prix from the early 2030s. F1 chief Stefano Domenicali called it a “landmark” moment. The race will be branded the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda, and Rwanda says it will boost tourism and investment while raising its global profile. However, the deal faces criticism: Rwanda’s government has faced long-running accusations of abuses against political opponents and journalists, and human rights groups have questioned “sportswashing.” Allegations also exist about Rwanda’s support for M23 rebels in the DRC. The planned circuit will be in Bugesera, about 40 kilometers south of Kigali.
