Tesla crashes into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan, killing passenger

A gray 2024 Tesla Model Y SUV crashed into scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, killing the passenger and sending the driver to the hospital, police said. A preliminary investigation found the 27-year-old female driver struck scaffolding, a bus stop and a mailbox at about 2:43 a.m. while traveling eastbound on East 42nd Street, failing to navigate the roadway. EMS transported both the driver and a 27-year-old female passenger to a hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead; police said the driver is in stable condition. The cause of the loss of control is unknown, and the driver was taken into custody as the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad continues the probe.
