Tesla has issued its largest recall in China, covering 2,975,910 vehicles over an emergency mechanical door release latch that regulators say is hard to identify and operate. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) found the latch on Tesla doors may be difficult to find in emergencies because it matches the color of the interior trim too closely. The recall includes 973,156 China-built Model 3s and 1,956,713 Model Ys, plus 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 imported Model Xs, and 2,123 imported Model S vehicles. Tesla plans to address it with warning labels and an over-the-air update that lowers the windows automatically after a collision. Separately, Tesla also recalled over 2 million vehicles for inadequate driver monitoring: SAMR said the system that checks whether a driver holds the wheel is insufficient and needs eye tracking, to be fixed via software. Both actions are tied to SAMR findings and follow related investigations in the U.S. over door-handle problems.
