The First Production Motorcycle To Break 200 MPH

The Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa reshaped production-bike speed limits after it became the first mass-market motorcycle to break 200 mph. When Honda unveiled the GSX1300R in 1999, Suzuki aimed for the world’s fastest street-legal machine—mirrors, lights, warranty and all. Built around a 1,299cc inline-four making about 173 hp at 9,800 rpm, the bike was clocked at 194 mph in ideal testing conditions. Testers also highlighted chassis composure at extreme speed. That stability reduced rider fear at 180 mph and helped trigger industry-wide pressure to voluntarily cap top speeds.
