The Hypersquare Is a New 'Steering Wheel' That's Even Weirder Than Tesla's Yoke
The 2026 Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Auto) is opening with a wave of futuristic concept vehicles from French automakers, mixing nostalgia and technology. Among the highlights is Peugeot’s E-T16 Concept, described as a tri-motor electric hatchback that, according to Peugeot, could complete three laps of Nürburgring Nordschleife—over 60 km—in “Performance mode,” claiming no power limitation. The project visually nods back to the 205 T16 rally car that won the 1985 and 1986 World Rally Championships. Peugeot’s most distinctive feature is a steer-by-wire control called the Hypersquare, likened to a “charcuterie board” of buttons, including a configurable central display for speed and lap timing. Peugeot plans demo units at the show and has shown the Hypersquare on other concepts.
