This automaker is sticking with EVs as Trump scraps green car regs

General Motors President Mark Reuss said GM will stick with electric vehicles even as the Trump administration repeals strict Biden-era environmental rules. Speaking Sept. 29 at the Automotive News Congress in Detroit, Reuss argued that changing technology and propulsion plans with each regulatory shift is too costly, saying it “burns capital” and can’t be unwound quickly after major mistakes. He called GM’s approach the “long game,” adding that the company is investing in EV platform architecture and battery research to reduce costs. The new Trump fuel economy rules, released Monday, target about 34.9 mpg fleet average by 2031, while the Biden target was 52.5 mpg. GM is scaling back EV manufacturing to match softer US demand, while continuing investment.
