New U.S. fuel economy rules released Monday by the Trump administration reduce regulatory expectations for automakers to curb pollution from gasoline-powered cars and light trucks. The announcement came shortly after President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz, pushing oil prices higher. The Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate the final standards correspond to about 34.9 miles per gallon for passenger cars and light trucks in the 2031 model year, down from a Biden-era projection of 50.4 mpg. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy framed the shift as ending an “illegal mandate” tied to costly EV production. Supporters point to affordability and market alignment, while critics in the wider debate argue the relaxed rules carry environmental costs. The administration has also rolled back tailpipe emissions rules and eliminated EV purchase credits up to $7,500.
