President Donald Trump said he would accept Chinese automakers building vehicles in the United States, but a bipartisan Senate push aims to permanently block Chinese cars, software, and key components from the American market. Senators Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) and Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) are seeking unanimous approval this week of the Connected Vehicle Security Act of 2026, according to Reuters. The measure has 51 Senate supporters and the House version has more than 100 cosponsors. Slotkin warned that allowing Chinese factories in the U.S. could mark “the beginning of the end” for U.S. auto manufacturing. Automakers and industry groups are urging lawmakers to keep restrictions in place.
