Trump says he would be OK with China building cars in US

President Donald Trump said Friday he would not oppose Chinese automakers building cars in the United States, even as U.S. lawmakers and car companies have urged resistance. In an interview with Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Trump said: “If China wanted to come in and open a plant to build their cars here, I’d be okay with that,” adding that Japan builds in the U.S. and hires American workers. He said he does not want Chinese automakers making vehicles in Mexico and shipping them to the U.S. Trump faces opposition ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks. A Biden-era regulation effective in early 2025 effectively bans Chinese passenger-vehicle makers from the U.S., while Washington also maintains more than 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
