Video shows Tesla hit CHP car on I-80 in Fairfield; driver says he slept with Full Self-Driving on
California Highway Patrol released new video showing a Tesla crashing into a patrol car on Interstate 80 near Fairfield while officers investigated an earlier deadly crash. The incident occurred late Tuesday night on the eastbound side of I-80, west of Air Base Parkway, where CHP said four lanes were closed using flares and cones. At freeway speeds, the Tesla entered the closure and struck a Dodge Charger with two officers inside. CHP said the 22-year-old driver from Sacramento told investigators he had fallen asleep and that the Tesla was in Full Self-Driving mode. CHP emphasized that Full Self-Driving is a driver-assistance system requiring active supervision. Both officers suffered serious injuries and are recovering; the Tesla driver had minor injuries. CHP said the officers had been investigating a separate crash about an hour earlier that killed a 19-year-old in San Pablo.
