Volkswagen approves plan to cut another 50,000 jobs, weighs future of four German plants

Volkswagen’s supervisory board has unanimously approved CEO Oliver Blume’s “Future Plan,” authorizing another 50,000 job cuts worldwide and an end to vehicle production at four German plants: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm. The move adds to an already agreed reduction of 50,000 roles by the end of the decade, bringing the total planned workforce reduction by 2030 to around 100,000. Management says low-cost Chinese competition, weak demand, overcapacity, and U.S. tariffs require a “fundamental adjustment” of global workforce capacity. The company also plans to streamline its model range and boost volume per model, but it did not specify timing or allocation by brand.
