WATCH: Trump praises 'really brilliant decision' on Balogun's red card after he called FIFA's Infantino
After FIFA cleared U.S. forward Folarin Balogun to play Belgium in the Round of 16 on Monday, President Donald Trump publicly praised the handling of Balogun’s red card. Trump told reporters that he “asked for a review,” adding he did not demand a specific outcome. He said he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino about the mandatory one-game ban following Balogun’s red card in the United States’ 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina last week in Santa Clara, California. Trump called the referee’s initial decision a “horrible” call and argued it would have been damaging if Balogun, the U.S. leading scorer with three goals, had been ruled out. He praised FIFA for what he described as a “brilliant decision” to suspend the punishment, while Infantino defended the process as involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies. The Belgian federation and UEFA had criticized the move.
