Waymo's next-generation self-driving system can 'see' a stop sign 500 meters away
Waymo has unveiled its fifth-generation self-driving system, saying it can detect hazards farther and more accurately than its previous versions. The update relies on upgraded sensors—29 integrated cameras plus radar and in-house LIDAR—aimed at improving production readiness and lowering per-unit cost. Waymo claims its cameras can see a stop sign 500 meters away, supported by high-dynamic range and thermal stability across automotive temperature ranges. The company also says its redesigned “imaging radar” offers higher resolution, range and field of view, while its LIDAR can view objects up to 300 meters. Waymo plans to roll the system into a coming fleet of Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs before year-end, with up to 20,000 vehicles for a ride-hailing service in Phoenix-area suburbs.
