DOJ officials described the case as part of an unprecedented federal-state effort to combat healthcare fraud, government program fraud, and consumer scams totaling more than $57 million in alleged losses. Four Ohio defendants were charged in connection with the behavioral health fraud scheme, which billed Medicaid for therapeutic services and psychotherapy provided to children and young adults at summer camps, church groups, and recreational programs. Prosecutors alleged many services were medically unnecessary or not provided as billed, and that the scheme continued under a different entity after credentialing was lost. Authorities seized roughly $469,000 across three bank accounts and 14 vehicles valued at about $800,000, including six Mercedes-Benz vehicles, a Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Maserati, two Land Rovers, a GMC, and a McLaren. This Ohio investigation was presented as the centerpiece of broader DOJ partnership announcements with federal and state agencies, expanded data sharing, and the FBI’s new Most Wanted Fraudsters list. Separately, prosecutors charged four defendants with fraudulently obtaining more than $1.4 million in COVID-19 Paycheck Protection Program loans.
