Why do we use gasoline for small vehicles and diesel fuel for big vehicles?
Gasoline for small vehicles and diesel for big vehicles is mainly explained by how the two fuels behave inside internal combustion engines. Gasoline engines ignite a compressed fuel-air mixture with a spark plug, while diesel fuel is harder to ignite and requires much higher compression so it burns without a spark. That higher compression can improve efficiency, which is why many long-haul trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty operators favor diesel to move goods and people more economically. Diesel engines also tend to be more expensive and heavier-duty, but they can last longer for high-mileage use. However, diesel is typically noisier and produces higher levels of fine particle pollution known as PM 2.5. In competitive terms, drivers often choose cheaper and quieter gasoline engines for everyday use, while fleets may prioritize diesel’s efficiency and durability. In the future, hybrids and electric buses may reduce dependence on both.
