Andy Burnham enrages Brits with major TV change - 'could bring Government down!'
Andy Burnham’s proposed shift to an internet-only TV system has triggered backlash in the UK, with critics warning it could cut off elderly people and low-income households. The report cites figures suggesting up to 5.4 million homes either lack reliable high-speed broadband or can’t afford the necessary internet connection. Supporters of the change argue that keeping terrestrial transmitters is getting more expensive as consumers move to smart TVs and streaming. Broadcasters including BBC and ITV have backed an online model, warning that shows could be reduced if TV doesn’t go fully digital. More than 70 MPs signed a letter demanding free-to-air Freeview until at least 2044, while Burnham said he’s concerned about a 2034 target and may review plans.
