Behind-The-Scenes Secrets You Probably Didn't Know About How Netflix's Below Got Made

Netflix’s Below—premiering earlier this month—has become a breakout hit in the build-up to spooky season, starring Josh Hartnett as fisherman Calvin Penney in a supernatural story set in Newfoundland’s fishing community. His character fights a mysterious sea creature while protecting friends and family, including son Wade played by Charlie Heaton. Filmed in Newfoundland, the production drew heavily on local talent: many actors and crew members were from the area. Creator Jesse McKeown based the series on his family’s Newfoundland roots and aimed to spotlight a long-marginalized community shaped by government resettlement plans in the mid-20th century.
