LETTER: Why King George's Hall will always hold a special place in my heart
A letter to the editor reflects on King George’s Hall’s personal impact after its reopening with a Halle concert. The writer, who has lived in Leeds for 43 years and grew up in Blackburn, recalls attending their first classical concert at age 12 at King George’s Hall but leaving during the interval because they couldn’t afford a programme and didn’t realize it hadn’t ended. The letter describes a childhood shaped by limited means, including growing up in a one-parent home, yet finding an “escape” through Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society concerts at the hall. The author cites memories including a performance of Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony with soprano Heather Harper, later a piano recital by John Ogdon, and the 1966 Verdi Requiem attended by Princess Margaret.
